Featured Photog: Aaron Turner

Aaron Turner is a 20-year-old junior at The University of Memphis, where he writes for The Daily Helmsman newspaper. His work can also be read on online magazines including Clutch Magazine and The Fresh Express. Turner works as an up-and-coming fashion photographer. Oh, and he uses a Canon.

  • Beale Street Chick: Are you originally from Memphis?
  • Aaron Turner: No, I'm originally from West Memphis, Arkansas. That's where I was raised and spent most of my childhood. The second semester of eighth grade is when I moved to Memphis.

  • BSC: What's your major and why did you choose it?
  • AT: My major is photojournalism, because I'm passionate about story telling through the medium of photography. During my freshman year my major was Sports Management; I had dreams of being a general manager of a Major League Baseball team, but then I realized that I really didn't have a passion for sports any more, so I changed my major to journalism because I was really into blogging at the time. I took the "Photo 1" class the next semester and I've loved it ever since.

  • BSC: What was it like shooting behind the scenes at the Miss Black and Gold Pageant recently?

Backstage at the 2011 Miss Black and Gold Pageant at The U of M

  • AT: When I shot the Miss Black and Gold Pageant back in February, the idea had been in my head for about two weeks before the actual show, but I knew months ahead that I would be shooting the pageant, it just didn't dawn on me to get backstage footage until the time drew near. I basically just politely asked the ladies if I could come back stage to photograph them, and surprisingly they said yes, so I just went with it. It was a good experience; I'm looking forward to doing something similar down the road.

  • BSC: What's been your most fun photo session, so far (fashion or otherwise)?

Still from The Story Shoot

  • AT:  My most enjoyable photo shoot has to be "The Story" which I did right before Winter break 2010. The idea just came to me one day, and at the time I was really in to vintage fashion, and wanted to try and create some type of vintage love story per say. I just asked my friends Cherise and Silas if they would like to be my models for it and they said yes. It was my first time doing something like that, and I was happy with the end result. It was about a three hour shoot, but I really had fun. Cherise and Silas are my favorite people to work with.

  • BSC: What do you hope to do with your career (in general)?
  • AT: For my career in general I just want to document as much as possible. For example when the earthquake in Japan happened, I want to be in position where I work for or freelance for major news organization and be sent on assignment to cover major disasters and things all over the world. I want to discover and let the world know about things the otherwise wouldn't know is happening if it weren't for m camera lens capturing it. I want to get the truth out. So in a nutshell I want to travel the country and world when given the opportunity.

  • BSC: Why did you get into photography? Into fashion photography?

  • AT: I originally got into photography by taking a Photography 1 class at the University of Memphis. I changed my major to journalism and decided to get a minor in photography just because everyone has to have so many skills to get hired these days. It was a black and white film class, so I purchased a old 35mm Olympus camera from Ebay and began my journey. I had an old film camera before I ever bought my first digital camera and I encourage anyone interested in photography to learn how to use an old film camera before buying there first digital camera.

  • BSC: When you're not writing or taking photos, what do you like to do with your time?

  • AT: When I'm not writing articles and blog post or taking photos I like to just relax and watch movies or just surf the internet to see what other photographers from all over the world are doing. I also like to listen to music, some of my favorite artist are Kem, Bill Withers, Anthony Hamilton, Lyfe Jennings. Also, I like to hang out with my friends.

  • BSC: Any special projects in the work, that you would like people to know about?
  • AT: As far as upcoming projects that I have in mind, I'm currently planning the shoot for "The Story Part 2" It will probably premiere at the end of May if every thing works out or it will premiere sometime during the Fall 2011 semester.
